On Your First Day of School

Baby Hulk,

Last night I packed your Wookie t-shirt.  It’s too small for you.  I didn’t put it in the attic for your brother or in the donation pile.  It’s yours.  But it’s starting to look a bit too short on you.  Your dad says it’s time.

And it is.

Time to move in another direction.

It’s your first day of school.  Your first day of somebody other than me teaching you.

Academically, you’re ready.  More than ready.  (You’re welcome to any teacher you have in the next three years.)  I do have concerns, not the typical “no school will be good enough” concerns.  Concerns I won’t write here.  Concerns I take to the altar, to Mary.

I pray that your teacher appreciates the amazing, sensitive and quite honestly, brilliant boy that you are.  I hope she embraces the bit of quirkiness you have.  I pray that she has patience with you and that she keeps the fire going that I started in you.  I hope she finds ways to keep you engaged and interested.  I hope you find friends that are kind and interesting.  I hope that you flourish in school.

And every day, I will be waiting to hear all about your day.

My sweet, handsome, smart little boy, I love you so much.  I’ll miss learning with you and teaching you.  A secret, thus far, you are my best student.  I already miss your sweet little face.  I pray that God watches over you, that Mary mothers you when I’m not there and that those five little saints known as your sisters storm heaven to keep you happy and safe.  Maybe they can throw a few prayers my way too, that I stay sane while you’re gone.

Happy First Day of School, BH.

St. Gerard pray for my boy.

PS…that bitch who didn’t let me say goodbye this morning, well, she’ll pay.  I promise you that.  SHE. WILL. PAY.

    Such a great picture

I need to hear more about this bitch that didn’t let you say goodbye!

We are in week 3 of school and the first day of school, I was in the classroom until the bell rang! I still cried this year. I cried all day long last year and some on the second day.

BH is too handsome! We need to google that shirt and get him the next biggest size. I did that with J and his favorite Luigi shirt. I even found one in TA’s size. I must order it today so they can be twins. You should do the same for BH and LZ. 🙂

  3. From Cory:

So is it one or two more years before Kindergarten for Snax? I have a feeling the melt down when your last boy goes off to school is going to be epic.

  4. From Nicole:

Based on today’s performance, the kid has two years. But when it happens, start expecting text messages weeks in advance.

  5. From Nicole:

Isn’t he though?! I always think of him as old school handsome. He had a great day, and I am glad. I don’t want him to be upset. He did make me proud by wondering why the teacher read in school instead of him! (I do read a lot to him so I don’t know why he thought it was weird that the teacher would read!)

We need time this week. Much needed alone time. You would have been proud of me, I told that lady, once kids left, what I thought, no cussing even. Told the teachers and VP. Will also write an email for her file. I am so sick of this supposedly amazing school keeping people that they know to be a problem.

  6. From Nikki Andrews:

Looks like my Thursday night just opened up! Stoopid Hurricane! Are you free?
If not, I am free Friday night! I need to hear all about this lady at the school and how you told her off without cuss words. 🙂 I know how to do that too but it is not the method I prefer.

  7. From Jenn:

Seriously with the goodbye? Was it a teacher?
    That’s awful.

I can’t wait to hear more about how it’s going (and everyone surviving–even you!) You just have to trust in God’s plan for your children and they are lucky, so very, very blessed that you are there for them and WANT to be there for all chapters of their lives.

This post has me tearing up by the way.

I’m not nearly as worried about Snax first day of kinder as I am Sunshine’s!

Funny (not funny-funny, funny-crazy)–the day after I read this post we got an email from the school letting us know they’d instituted a “hug goodbye zone” right by the front door, with posters and everything, and that parents would no longer be allowed to walk kids back to class. Now, this so obviously did not apply to the first day at this school (the place was crawling with parents that day), that I wondered, do they have a problem throughout the year with people walking their kids to class? Do we really have so many parents that are that “helicoptery” that they needed a policy with posters? Then I wondered, is Nicole one of those people? 🙂
